At just 3 years old, Irie Jade was diagnosed with B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on April 4th 2025. Since then she has been in Starship Children’s Hospital with her māmā, beginning her first round of chemotherapy. The journey is expected to last two years.
This devastating diagnosis turned their world upside down. While treatment here in Aotearoa is free, the reality of living in hospital, supporting Irie Jade’s brothers back home, and being separated from whānau is overwhelming — emotionally, mentally, and financially.
Confined to her hospital room with limited visitors, Irie Jade’s immune system keeps her isolated. Even a simple cold could mean more hospital days or worse. Soon, they hope to move to Ronald McDonald House in Auckland for about a month, then travel from Hastings to Starship for each treatment round.
Every bit of awhi helps, from travel and accommodation costs to extra kai, clothing, and supplies. This fight is not just Irie Jade’s, it belongs to all of us.
